Katerra Interactive Catalogue

“Katerra is a technology-driven offsite construction company. It was founded in 2015 by Michael Marks, former CEO of Flextronics and former Tesla interim CEO. The company manufactures large building components off-site, particularly for multi-family housing.” Katerra’s goal is to tansform construction through technology – “every process and every product”.

In the wake of the company securing new funding for many of their large scale projects, they wanted to create a large presence at the upcoming 2019 IBS in Las Vegas. Katerra brought on Goodthings to design and create the exhibition space, interactive media, and the presentation reel to showcase their ongoing projects to new builders and investors.

This was one of projects that I got to see start to finish while at Goodthings. I worked and supported the team in a variety of forms including: Event Branding Presentation & Illustration Storyboarding Render Storyboarding Exhibition Web App Design.

My main focus during this project designing the exhibition web app. Katerra wanted to create was allowing people visiting their space was to see a catalogue of all of their products, factories, and ongoing build sites. I drafted, wire-framed, designed, animated, and tested at every stage of the app’s development. I worked closely with my creative director, developer, and client to build the app. I had the opportunity to jump into the code and learn more on the building process.

Closing Thoughts

This was one of the first UX projects where I was involved start to finish. There were a lot of things I had to learn quickly and efficiently to keep up with the pace of work. There were several points where I did stumble, or not know how to anticipate the next step in the process. Fortunately my creative director and developer were there to answer questions and teach me what I needed to know. If I had dedicated extra time to learn some of these skills in order to get ahead of the process, parts of my work could have been accomplished quicker. I learned that investing a little bit of time up front can reap huge benefits when it prepares you for tasks ahead. I must do my research and practicing if I want to be efficient and ahead of the curve with my work.
